Ishan das was initiated by Srila Prabhupada in 1968. After learning to make mridangas in Mayapur (1973-75) Ishan asked Srila Prabhupada if he could remain in India for the rest of his life and make mridangas for our movement. Srila Prabhupada’s reply was, “Go to the West. Use your technology and make a mridanga that our men can’t break.” After a year or so of research and development, with the support of key players like Karandhar and Ranadhir Prabhus, Ishan began production of the Balaram mridanga in L.A.
For the last 15 years Ishan has been living in the Gila Forest in New Mexico, U.S.A. on a 50 acre parcel, by a small stream. Along with his wife, Darvesha, they have been living in the wilderness, gardening, chopping wood, and carrying water.
